Know Your Options
Considering Abortion?
If you’re thinking about an abortion, there are some steps you’ll want to take before scheduling your abortion appointment. All of these steps are free at Your First Look.
1. Confirm Your Pregnancy with an Ultrasound
While a pregnancy test shows elevated hormones, an ultrasound is the best way to tell if your pregnancy is viable (located in the uterus). About one in three early pregnancies will naturally terminate due to miscarriage, blighted ovum, ectopic pregnancy, etc. We can offer you a free ultrasound at Your First Look.
2. Determine How Far Along You Are (Gestational Age)
The ultrasound will tell you just how far along you are. This will also tell you the cost and type of abortion you would be eligible to receive. In the Toledo area, a chemical/medical abortion will cost about $425. A surgical abortion will vary between $400 and $900 depending on where you go and the services provided. Beginning at 12 weeks, costs slowly rise as the pregnancy progresses.
3. Be Tested for STDs
Having an STI present when you have an abortion could impact having future fertility. The STI could cause you to develop PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). If you are concerned, we can test you for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, two of the most common STDs affecting women, at Your First Look.
Abortion Information
When you come in for your pregnancy test and ultrasound, we can answer your questions about abortion procedures including first-trimester medication abortion methods; first-trimester surgical abortion methods, and second-trimester abortion methods.
The Abortion Pill
This drug has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use up to 70 days after the last menstrual period. This type of abortion requires a visit to the clinic or a telehealth appointment. If you want to see how far along you are before ordering/taking the pill, give us a call.
The first pill, Mifeprex is taken to block progesterone and cause the death of the embryo. One to two days later, Misoprostol is taken to cause the uterus to expel the embryo. Bleeding and cramping occur with this process and large blood clots or tissue may be passed with the bleeding. Some abortion pill providers offer a follow-up appointment to make sure the abortion is complete.
Previous Abortions?
Your First Look Women’s Center provides free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds to confirm viability, and information on all your options—abortion, adoption, and parenting. We do not provide or refer for abortion services. All services are free and confidential
Adoption
Some women make an adoption plan for their unborn baby when they determine they are unable to be the best possible parent at this point in their lives. An adoption will allow you to have a new beginning while letting you select a stable, secure and loving family for your child.
As the birthmom, you get to choose who will adopt your child. You’ll get to see photos, learn their stories and pick the family that feels right to you. You can even choose to meet them. You also decide how much contact you have with the family after the adoption.
At Your First Look we can answer your questions and connect you with an adoption agency or attorney if you’d like to explore this option further. All costs associated with an adoption are paid by the adoptive family.
Parenting
The thought of being a parent can feel overwhelming. If you decide to parent, we can provide you with a list of agencies available to help you through your pregnancy and into parenthood. We can also help connect you with insurance, a doctor, and other community resources designed to help you have a healthy pregnancy.
We can answer your questions and help you find the resources and support you need. We can help you address such concerns as:
- My boyfriend doesn’t want a baby, but I do.
- How can I tell my family?
- Who will help me?
- What does a baby need?
- What resources can help?
- What if I change my mind?
